BASE

Say it like this

This is our normal look. Nothing changes. Point out the strong side and play base defense.

What can go wrong

ILBs getting swallowed by a lead FB on Iso/Dive if they do not trigger downhill fast enough; an aggressive secondary getting caught flat-footed by play-action off a heavy run look.

How we fix it

Drill the downhill trigger on Iso, and make the secondary confirm run with the offensive line, not the backfield.

Coach detail

Front shift

Standard strength call only — flip which side gets the tighter shade based on where the TE or second back declares.

Coverage

Rotate between a 2-high pre-snap disguise and the base 1-high (Cover 3) shell depending on down and distance.

Gap changes vs base

  • Sam owns the strong C-gap and reads the Tackle: drive block = run, pass-set = pass.
  • Mike keys the center/backfield and fires downhill to beat trap or disrupt sweep.
  • Will reads through the playside Guard/Tackle and shuffles inside on trap recognition.
