SCRAPE EXCHANGE

Say it like this

Quarterback is a few steps back. Stay in your gap and don't guess who has the ball.

-10-5+5+10+15AABBCCDDTGCGTTEQBRBXHZEnd crashes to diveILB scrapes to QBTTEEMSWBCCFABCDrun fit / containmovement

What can go wrong

If the LB scrapes late, or the End crashes without the exchange actually happening, the QB keep hits a wide-open alley.

How we fix it

Drill it with a stand-in dummy back so linebackers learn to find the ballcarrier late instead of guessing. This exchange takes real reps to time correctly.

Coach detail

Front shift

The playside End crashes down and takes the dive back, deliberately giving up his normal contain rule. The playside ILB scrapes outside and becomes the new, unblocked QB-contain defender.

Coverage

Base Cover 3 behind it.

Gap changes vs base

  • Playside End: C-gap contain becomes B-gap/dive responsibility.
  • Playside ILB: B-gap fit becomes edge/QB contain.
  • LBs keep reading their normal line key (the Guards) as primary and backfield action as secondary — a pulling guard always outweighs backfield motion.
