What can go wrong

Getting outnumbered on the trips side, or the backside becoming a one-on-one alley for a boot or a backside run.

How we fix it

Bandit apexes halfway between #2 and the tackle so he can still fit run; the backside corner is the alley player, not a deep-only defender.

Coach detail

Front shift

Front stays base. The Bandit becomes the apex player over #2; an ILB widens to carry #3.

Coverage

Corner presses #1, the apex OLB takes #2, and an ILB drops into a shallow zone on #3 at roughly 5-7 yards. Free Safety shades the trips side.

Gap changes vs base

  • The ILB carrying #3 gives up his B-gap fit — the backside ILB becomes the primary inside run fitter.
  • Backside Will keeps pure contain with no help outside of him.
